Renowned photographer and filmmaker Steve Ababio is dead

The photography and filmmaking world has been plunged into mourning following the death of internationally acclaimed travel and adventure photographer, Steve Ababio.

He passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2024, after a brief illness, according to his family.

The cause of death remains undisclosed. His family has announced that they will receive visitors wishing to pay their respects at the First Love Church, near Trinity Bible Seminary—the Vineyard of Engeddi—on specific dates, rather than at his residence.

In a heartfelt statement issued on Monday, the family shared their grief and loss:

“It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing to glory of Mr. Steve Ababio on Sunday, 29th Dec 2024. We will miss him more than words can express.”

They extended an invitation to friends, colleagues, and loved ones to join them in celebrating Steve’s life and paying their condolences.

Steve Ababio’s passing has triggered an outpouring of tributes from friends, admirers, and members of the creative community.

Mawuko Afadzinu, a close friend, shared an emotional tribute on social media:

“My heart hurts! Tears keep dripping. Yesterday, I told Nana I must see you. Now I know why. You were on the way to the Father. Thank you for over 50 years of an amazing ‘little brother/big brother’ role swap. From Kokomlemle, through Uni, to adulthood, you were always there for me no matter when and what. Rest well in the bosom of our Lord.”

Photographer Kobby Blay expressed his pain succinctly, posting the word “heartbroken” accompanied by tearful emojis.

Steve Ababio was a pioneer in African travel and adventure photography. His ability to present the continent’s beauty through a uniquely African lens made him a standout figure in the field.

Born on May 17, 1968, Steve attended Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC) in Accra. He later honed his craft at the College of Art at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he developed his distinctive storytelling style.

Over the years, Steve’s work brought global attention to Africa’s vibrant landscapes, cultures, and people, earning him widespread recognition and admiration.

Steve Ababio’s contributions to photography and filmmaking have left an indelible mark on the creative world. His legacy as a storyteller and artist will continue to inspire generations to come.

The family has indicated that further details regarding funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.
