President-elect John Dramani Mahama has paid a courtesy call on the Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewusoale I, the overlord of the Gonja Traditional Area, to express his profound gratitude for the chief’s unwavering support and prayers during his campaign.
The visit, which took place at the Yagbonwura’s palace in Damongo, was a significant gesture of respect and acknowledgement following Mahama’s victory in the 2024 presidential elections.
The meeting underscored the strong ties between the president-elect and the Gonja Traditional Area.
During the visit, Mr. Mahama expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Yagbonwura for his consistent counsel and spiritual guidance. He specifically commended the chief for sending a delegation to Accra to congratulate him upon his electoral success, a move that symbolised their enduring bond.
“I am deeply grateful for the prayers and advice you have consistently offered me. These have been a source of strength during challenging times,” Mr. Mahama remarked while addressing the gathered audience.
The president-elect also took the opportunity to reaffirm his commitment to delivering on the promises made during his campaign.
He acknowledged the decisive mandate given to him by the electorate, attributing his victory to the widespread hardships Ghanaians have endured in recent years.
“The margin of victory reflects the people’s demand for change. It is a testament to the difficulties they have faced and their hope for a new direction,” he stated.
Mr. Mahama assured the Yagbonwura and all Ghanaians of his dedication to reviving the nation’s economy and improving living standards.
“I promise to work tirelessly to make Ghana a better place for everyone,” he pledged, emphasising that his administration’s priorities would include youth employment, infrastructure development, and economic stability.
The Yagbonwura, in his response, congratulated the president-elect on his victory and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the new administration with prayers and guidance. He also urged Mr. Mahama to stay focused on addressing the pressing needs of the people, particularly in areas that demand urgent attention.
The visit served as a symbolic reminder of the deep connection between Ghana’s governance and its rich cultural heritage. It reinforced the critical role traditional leaders play in shaping national unity and progress.
With humility and dedication on full display, John Mahama left the palace with the blessings and encouragement of one of Ghana’s most respected traditional leaders. The visit signals the beginning of a new chapter in the nation’s political journey, one marked by renewed hope and a collective commitment to a brighter future.
