Policeman kills colleague during funeral clash in Bono East

A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at Abease along the Prang-Kintampo road in the Bono East region, when a policeman reportedly shot and killed his colleague during a confrontation with mourners at a funeral procession.

The altercation occurred around 11:30 a.m. as mourners heading to a cemetery encountered a police barrier. The situation became heated when a member of the funeral procession allegedly insulted a policewoman stationed at the barrier.

In response, the policewoman called for reinforcement. When the backup team arrived, tensions escalated further, leading to a clash between the mourners and the police.

Amid the confrontation, one of the officers fired warning shots. In an attempt by some mourners to disarm the officer, his firearm accidentally discharged, striking his colleague in the abdomen.

Realising the gravity of the situation, the officer responsible fled the scene.

The injured policeman was rushed to a nearby clinic and later transferred to Techiman Hospital for advanced treatment. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries while receiving care.

The Ghana Police Service has yet to issue an official statement on the incident. However, sources indicate that investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Efforts are also being made to locate the officer who fled the scene.

This incident adds to the growing concerns about confrontations between civilians and law enforcement officers in Ghana.
