Police and Fire Service launch investigation into fire at Kwashieman school

The Ghana Police Service, in partnership with the Ghana National Fire Service, has initiated a thorough investigation into a fire outbreak that occurred at the Kwashieman Cluster of Schools in Accra during the early hours of Tuesday, December 17, 2024.

The school is known to house the Ablekuma North Constituency’s ballot boxes, a detail that has raised concerns amidst ongoing political tensions.

The fire, which was discovered at dawn, has left many questioning its cause, given the sensitive nature of the school’s role in storing electoral materials.

The authorities have assured the public that a comprehensive probe is underway, with the goal of identifying the responsible parties. In an official statement, the police emphasized that anyone found culpable for the fire would be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The Ghana Police Service has urged citizens to remain calm and assured them that the situation would be thoroughly investigated.

They also expressed their commitment to ensuring that the integrity of the election materials and the stability of the electoral process are maintained.

This fire outbreak comes at a time when the nation is experiencing heightened political tensions following the 2024 elections. There have been disturbances in various parts of the country, leading to arrests and the deployment of security forces to maintain order.

According to the police, 132 individuals have been arrested in connection with these post-election disturbances, which have included protests and civil unrest. Of the 132 suspects, 45 have been remanded into custody, 71 are currently on police inquiry bail, and 16 individuals have been granted court bail as legal proceedings continue.

Authorities have called on the public to cooperate with the police as they continue their investigations into the fire and the wider disturbances.

They have reassured citizens that the investigation into the cause of the fire will be transparent and thorough, and anyone found responsible for the incident will face appropriate legal action.

In light of the unrest and the fire, security agencies have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring peace and stability throughout the country. The police have urged citizens to remain patient as investigations into the fire continue and have reiterated their promise to uphold law and order.

This incident underscores the importance of vigilance and accountability, particularly as Ghana works to preserve the integrity of its democratic processes. With the ongoing investigations into the fire and the post-election disturbances, both authorities and citizens alike will be keenly watching to ensure that peace is restored and that any violations of the law are dealt with swiftly.

The case continues to develop, and the public is urged to follow official channels for updates on the investigation.
