The Member of Parliament for Hohoe, John Peter Amewu, has officially inaugurated a state-of-the-art 7,000-seater stadium in Hohoe, Volta Region. The facility marks a significant leap forward in sports infrastructure for the region, known for producing some of Ghana’s finest athletes.
Sharing the origins of the project, Mr. Amewu recounted how the idea was conceived in 2005 during his tenure as the Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive under former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s administration.
He revealed that the project began with an unconventional personal sacrifice. “A very good friend gave me about 120,000 solid concrete blocks to build a hotel.
However, I decided to use them for a greater purpose—to benefit the entire Hohoe constituency for generations. So, I transported them with several trailers and began construction,” Mr. Amewu explained.
The project faced setbacks, stalling after his exit from office in 2008. However, it was revived with the New Patriotic Party’s return to power in 2016.
Mr. Amewu attributed the project’s success to the collective efforts of the Hohoe community, including traditional leaders, landowners, and private contributors.
He particularly praised Togbe Adzema and the late Gbi Paramount Chief, Togbega Gabusu, for their pivotal roles in resolving challenges related to land acquisition and funding. “The chiefs, landowners, and sports enthusiasts of Hohoe deserve the credit. This stadium is a collective effort inspired by their passion for sports,” he said.
Mr. Amewu highlighted the stadium’s potential to become a hub for nurturing athletic talent in Hohoe and beyond. He noted that several local athletes have already attracted national and international attention.
“Currently, one of our boys has been called to the national team, and two others are in the process of moving to Poland. My dream is to see 11 players from Hohoe represent the Black Stars someday,” he stated.
The stadium, which boasts a seating capacity of over 7,000 and can accommodate up to 10,000 spectators with standing room, is 90% complete.
“What is left is the VIP stand, which we are working on. By the first quarter of next year, we should achieve total completion,” Mr. Amewu assured.
Describing the event as a testament to unity and vision, Mr. Amewu expressed gratitude to all stakeholders involved.
“Today, we are all witnessing something magnificent. The motivation to do this came from the people of Hohoe, and I say a big thank you to everyone involved,” he concluded.
The stadium is set to be a cornerstone in developing sports in the Volta Region, creating opportunities for athletes and fostering community pride.
