Parliamentary sessions relocated to AICC- Alban Bagbin

In a rare move, Ghana’s Parliament will hold its upcoming session at the Dome of the International Conference Centre starting on September 3, due to ongoing renovations in the main parliamentary chamber.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin announced the change, emphasising the need to accommodate the essential upgrade work.

The decision was made official in a letter from Speaker Bagbin, dated August 27, 2024. Citing Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution, Bagbin explained that the Constitution permits him to select an alternate venue for parliamentary meetings when required.

Renovations in the main chamber have been extensive, focussing on upgrading the infrastructure to provide a more functional and modern environment for parliamentary proceedings.

The refurbishment includes the installation of new desks, chairs, and other equipment necessary for the efficient operation of the legislative body.

However, the work will not be finished in time for the session’s start date, prompting the temporary relocation.

This change in venue is intended to ensure that parliamentary activities can continue without disruption, despite the ongoing construction.

The International Conference Centre’s Dome has been chosen for its capacity to host large gatherings and its suitability as a temporary legislative space.

The decision to move the session underscores Parliament’s commitment to maintaining a productive legislative process, even during periods of necessary maintenance and improvement. As work progresses on the main chamber, the parliamentarians are expected to adapt to the temporary setting, continuing their work to shape and implement policies for the nation.
