“Parliament Must Be the Bulwark of Democracy in Ghana” – Alban Bagbin
Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, re-elected as Speaker of Ghana’s 9th Parliament, has reaffirmed Parliament’s pivotal role in safeguarding democracy, emphasising that the House must function as the “bulwark of democracy” for the nation.
Delivering his acceptance speech after being sworn in, Bagbin highlighted the significance of collaboration and trust in achieving this vision:
“I promise to bring all these experiences to bear in guiding this House to perform its mandate with efficiency, diligence, and above all, with a sense of being the bulwark of democracy in Ghana.”
Bagbin, who made history as Ghana’s longest-serving legislator, takes on this renewed mandate with the added experience of four years as Speaker of the 8th Parliament—a term defined by its hung composition and political intricacies.
Reflecting on his journey, Bagbin noted how his prior experience as Speaker shaped his approach:
“I came to the Speakership of the 8th Parliament with my experience as the longest-serving legislator of the House. I now come to the 9th Parliament not only with that background but with the experience of four years of speakership in a very difficult hung Parliament.”
These experiences, he stated, will guide his efforts to foster efficiency, diligence, and unity in the House.
Bagbin appealed to members of Parliament to work together in the national interest, setting aside political differences:
“Honourable Members of Parliament-elect, I am very grateful for the privilege and confidence you have reposed in me to be Speaker and to help this honourable House once more.”
He also urged Ghanaians to actively engage with Parliament’s work, stressing the importance of transparency and inclusivity:
“To the good people of Ghana who continue to hope for a better Ghana, I urge you to support your Parliament and be interested and engaged with the work of Parliament.”
With the 9th Parliament set against a backdrop of political polarisation, Bagbin pledged to lead with maturity, diplomacy, and strategic decision-making. He emphasised the need for a responsible and collaborative approach to governance.
“Today’s timing is not conducive for confrontation,” he remarked, signalling a commitment to fostering dialogue and progress.
Bagbin’s immediate responsibilities include swearing in newly elected Members of Parliament and overseeing the election of Deputy Speakers, key steps in laying the foundation for the 9th Parliament’s work.
