Over 380 Diplomatic Passports Returned Following Presidential Recall

More than 380 diplomatic passports have been returned to the government following a presidential directive aimed at enhancing accountability and proper management of these travel documents, according to sources.

The directive, issued by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, mandated the return of all diplomatic and service passports issued under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

The recall officially expired on Friday, January 24, 2025.

According to ministry sources, the majority of the passports were submitted by Thursday, January 23, just a day before the deadline.

This initiative forms part of the government’s broader efforts to ensure that diplomatic passports are used solely for their intended purpose: facilitating official state representation abroad. Diplomatic passports grant holders privileges such as expedited customs clearance and exemptions from certain taxes and duties in host countries.

However, concerns about the misuse of these documents, particularly by individuals no longer serving in official capacities, had raised alarms about potential risks to national security and international relations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which spearheaded the recall, has reaffirmed its commitment to implementing stricter measures to prevent future abuses.

“This exercise is not just about recovering the passports but ensuring the integrity of the system and safeguarding the country’s reputation in the international community,” a source at the ministry noted.

The recall follows reports of former officials retaining diplomatic passports after leaving office, leading to calls for better oversight and management of these specialised travel documents.

By reclaiming over 380 passports, the administration has taken a significant step towards strengthening accountability and ensuring that diplomatic privileges are reserved for individuals actively representing the state.
