NPP Presidential Race: Nomination GH₵ 100,000; Filing GH₵ 500,000

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially opened nominations for its 2028 presidential primaries, launching what is expected to be a fiercely contested internal race to choose a flagbearer ahead of the next general elections.

At a press briefing held in Accra on Monday, July 29, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua announced the commencement of the nomination process, signalling the start of a critical phase in the party’s political calendar.

“I’m happy to announce to you that we have officially opened nominations for our party members to become presidential candidates of our party for the 2028 elections,” Kodua stated.

According to the party’s guidelines, interested aspirants are required to pay GH₵100,000 for nomination forms and an additional GH₵500,000 as the official filing fee—bringing the total cost to GH₵600,000. The nomination window begins immediately and will remain open until Thursday, August 28, 2025.

The presidential primaries have been scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.

While the NPP maintains that the fees help cover logistical and organisational expenses, critics have often raised concerns about the prohibitive nature of such high costs. Civil society groups and political analysts argue that these financial requirements can limit the race to only affluent contenders or those with elite backing, thereby narrowing the field and stifling grassroots participation.

Nevertheless, the early opening of nominations demonstrates the NPP’s strategy to provide its eventual presidential candidate with sufficient time to heal internal wounds, consolidate party support, and engage in national outreach ahead of the crucial 2028 polls.

The coming weeks are expected to see a flurry of political activity as prospective candidates declare their intentions and begin canvassing for support within the party’s rank and file.
