Police in Koforidua have launched an investigation into the tragic death of Yaa Serwaa, a nine-year-old pupil of Trinity Presbyterian Basic School, who drowned in the swimming pool of Tonyx Hotel on Sunday, December 1, 2024.
The young girl had visited the pool with her father and five siblings to relax, but the outing turned tragic. According to reports, Yaa Serwaa stayed by the poolside, taking pictures while her siblings and other children swam.
Tragically, she was later discovered unresponsive at the bottom of the pool. Efforts to save her proved futile, as she was pronounced dead on arrival at the Eastern Regional Hospital.
Her mother recounted to Starr FM that Yaa Serwaa hadn’t entered the pool but was nearby when the incident occurred.
“The child didn’t swim. She sat near the pool to take pictures. She went with her father, but later, the father started searching for her all over. Then someone alerted him that the child was under the pool,” she explained.
The incident occurred just days after Yaa Serwaa joyfully celebrated her ninth birthday.
Police investigations are underway to determine how the drowning occurred and whether lapses in supervision or safety protocols contributed to the tragedy.
The management of Tonyx Hotel has expressed deep sorrow and pledged full cooperation with the authorities. A delegation from the hotel has visited the bereaved family to offer their condolences.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the importance of stringent safety measures and vigilant supervision in recreational facilities, particularly where children are involved.
