The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced that it will commence the registration of children between the ages of 6 and 14 for the Ghana Card, starting on October 7, 2024.
This new phase is part of the government’s broader effort to include every citizen in the national identification system.
The initial registration will take place in schools across selected districts, aiming to provide easy and accessible registration for eligible children. By focussing on schools, the NIA intends to streamline the process, making it more convenient for parents and guardians to ensure their children are registered.
Alfred Gazari, the Deputy Director of Operations at the NIA, emphasised the importance of this exercise.
Speaking to Citi News, monitored by Puretvonline.com, he noted that incorporating children into the national identification database is key to achieving full inclusion of Ghanaians in the system.
“It’s essential that we register children between 6 and 14 years as part of our broader objective to enrol every Ghanaian. We’ve already completed registration for those above 15 years and are currently working on zero to 5 years. This phase is the final step in completing the nationwide registration,” Gazari said.
He added, “The Ghana Card is now central to accessing various services in the country, so it’s crucial that children in this age group are included in the system.”
