New SIM Card Registration Exercise Will Be Human Centred, Tech Driven – Sam George
Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, has assured Ghanaians that the government’s upcoming SIM card registration exercise will be a vastly improved, human-centred, and technology-driven process—aimed at correcting the flaws of the previous re-registration initiative.
Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Wednesday, April 9, the minister took a swipe at the Akufo-Addo administration’s 2021 re-registration campaign, describing it as a “botched” process that failed to meet its objectives and triggered a rise in SIM-related fraud.
“This is a human-centred, technology-driven exercise,” Sam George stated. “It will happen so seamlessly and without stress that most Ghanaians will ask themselves why they were saddled with eight years of misrule and mismanagement.”

According to him, the new re-registration drive will leverage advanced technology and place the user experience at its core, ensuring that citizens go through a stress-free and secure process.
The previous SIM re-registration exercise, introduced under the Akufo-Addo-led government in 2021, aimed to streamline the telecom industry and bolster national security by linking all SIM cards to the Ghana Card. However, the initiative was fraught with issues—ranging from logistical delays to public dissatisfaction over data security and digital accessibility.
Despite multiple deadline extensions, millions of SIM cards remained unregistered, leading to disconnections and public outcry. Critics raised concerns about the lack of infrastructure to support the process and alleged breaches in data protection.
Sam George pointed out that those shortcomings not only caused public inconvenience but also failed to prevent SIM-based criminal activities—an issue the new system aims to resolve decisively.
The upcoming re-registration process, according to the minister, is expected to fulfil the original goal of creating a secure, accurate, and verifiable SIM card database. This, he says, will strengthen Ghana’s digital security framework and pave the way for more effective telecom regulation.
Key to this process will be the integration of biometric verification, improved user accessibility, and a clearer communication strategy to guide citizens through each step.
“We are not just re-registering for the sake of it. We are fixing the broken system and making it future-proof,” Sam George emphasised.
He assured Ghanaians that the ministry will roll out an extensive public education campaign ahead of the exercise to ensure every citizen understands their role and rights in the process.
