New GBA President vows to unite and transform the Association

Efua Ghartey, the newly elected President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), has committed to leading the association into a unified and progressive era.

Following her historic election in Kumasi on Wednesday, Ghartey pledged to bridge divisions and eliminate factions within the GBA, stressing that unity is essential for the association’s success.

“The bar has spoken, and from this day forward, it is a united bar in service. No divisions, no factions. It is over. It is time that we put shoulders to the plough and work to deliver what we believe should be the bar in progress,” Ghartey declared.

She further highlighted that her election marks a significant moment for the GBA, with women now at the helm for the first time.

“This indeed is something new, something novel. The bar, for the first time, has entrusted leadership to the ladies, and I know that with God’s help, we shall make you proud,” she added.

Mrs. Ghartey secured 1,278 votes, defeating her closest competitor, Agbesi Dzakpasu, who garnered 1,060 votes. A seasoned lawyer with over 30 years of experience, Ghartey’s victory is seen as a breakthrough after two previous attempts, where she narrowly lost to Tony Forson and Yaw Boafo by slim margins.

Her perseverance over the last six years, coupled with her extensive service to the GBA, has earned her widespread respect.

Mrs. Ghartey is also the wife of former Attorney General Joe Ghartey, adding another layer to her impressive credentials.

In the vice presidential race, Victoria Barth emerged victorious with 1,624 votes, defeating Ebenezer Kwaitoo, who received 495 votes.

Mrs. Barth, a highly accomplished legal professional, is recognized for her distinguished academic career and dedication to mentoring young lawyers at the Ghana School of Law.

The election of Efua Ghartey and Victoria Barth is being hailed as a transformative moment for the GBA, bringing fresh leadership and new perspectives to the legal profession in Ghana.
