The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has embarked on a nationwide demonstration today, Tuesday, September 17, protesting the Electoral Commission’s (EC) refusal to conduct a forensic audit of the voter register.
The protests are ongoing across all 16 regions of Ghana, following routes approved by authorities.
The decision to demonstrate was announced by the NDC’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, on September 16.
The party has raised serious concerns about alleged discrepancies in the voter register, arguing that these could compromise the credibility of the upcoming December 7 elections.
Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the NDC’s Director of Elections, voiced his concerns on social media, calling the current register “unfit for purpose.”
He emphasised the need for a forensic audit or a parliamentary investigation to address what he describes as “incurably defective” issues within the register.
According to the NDC, ensuring the accuracy of the voter list is crucial for maintaining a fair and credible electoral process.
The party’s flagbearer, John Mahama, has also spoken out, urging a peaceful demonstration. In his statement, he asked participants to maintain calm and avoid any acts of violence.
“This is a peaceful demonstration,” Mahama said. “If you know you cannot be peaceful, don’t come. We want only the people of peace to join us.”
The NDC’s protest highlights their demand for transparency in the electoral process and the need for the EC to address public concerns about the integrity of the voter register before the December polls.
