NDC elects 8 dynamic women MPs, strengthens push for gender equality

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken a significant step toward promoting gender equality with the election of eight new female Members of Parliament (MPs) in the recent general elections.

Representing diverse constituencies across the country, these women bring fresh perspectives and a commitment to addressing pressing local and national issues.

Profiles of the New MPs

Mavis Kukuaa Bissue Boateng – Ahanta West

Mavis Boateng emerged victorious with 28,227 votes (58.27%), defeating the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Francis Eric Pobee. As the first female NDC candidate for the constituency, she focuses on healthcare, education, and economic development. Notable among her achievements is the provision of clean drinking water through boreholes in the Egyambra community.

Faustina Elikplim Akurugu – Dome Kwabenya

Akurugu won with 51,634 votes, narrowly defeating NPP’s Michael Aaron Oquaye. Running for the seat for the second time, she emphasizes job creation, infrastructure development, and community safety. Akurugu plans to establish a local MP office and hold regular town hall meetings to foster accountability and inclusivity.

Rachel Owusua – Dormaa East

Rachel Owusua secured 12,310 votes, defeating the NPP’s Paul Apreku Twum-Marimah. Focused on reducing youth unemployment, she proposes a free apprenticeship program with stipends for apprentices and mentors. Owusua’s campaign emphasized practical solutions to persistent local challenges.

Phillis Naa Koryor Okunor – Awutu Senya East

Okunor triumphed with 50,886 votes against the incumbent, NPP’s Mavis Hawa Koomson. Known for community health initiatives and education support, her tenure has been marked by controversy, including her 2024 arrest related to political tensions in the constituency. She remains committed to sustainable community development.

Jean-Marie Formadi—Biakoye

Jean-Marie Formadi won with 17,760 votes, representing the NDC as the first female candidate in the constituency. Her focus includes addressing child trafficking in island communities, supporting farmers and fishers, and fostering accountability through regular community engagement.

Emelia Ankomah – Upper Denkyira East

Emelia Ankomah garnered 24,426 votes, defeating NPP’s Festus Awuah Kwofie. With a strong legal background, she prioritizes job creation, youth development, and infrastructure improvements. Ankomah’s campaign emphasized the importance of electing candidates committed to sustainable development.

Joana Gyan Cudjoe – Amenfi Central

Cudjoe secured 26,345 votes following a contentious candidacy resolved through legal channels. Her platform highlights education, infrastructure, and women’s empowerment. Despite initial setbacks, her victory underscores her resilience and the support of her constituents.

Ernestina Ofori Dangbey – Agona West

Dangbey won with 26,080 votes, defeating NPP’s Christopher Arthur and incumbent Cynthia Mamle Morrison. She is dedicated to improving road infrastructure, healthcare, and education, with a grassroots-focused approach to governance.

The eight MPs-elect were groomed by LeadAfrique International, a pan-African organization specializing in leadership development.
