The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has expressed the party’s unwavering confidence in winning the upcoming December general elections in the first round.
Speaking on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV, Mr. Kwetey affirmed that while the NDC remains optimistic about its chances, the ultimate decision lies with the Ghanaian electorate.
“We’re confident we are going to win by the first round. But at the end of the day, it’s always left in the hands of the people of Ghana,” he said.
While expressing confidence in the NDC’s chances, Mr. Kwetey raised concerns about the performance and credibility of the Electoral Commission (EC). He criticised the EC for falling short of expectations, citing challenges such as the postponement of special voting in the Western and Eastern regions.
“The Jean Mensa electoral commission has touted itself as the best in our history, but the evidence doesn’t support that claim. We’ve seen hitches that suggest they are not on top of their job,” he remarked.
Kwetey also drew comparisons with previous EC leadership under Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan and Charlotte Osei, suggesting that the current commission lacks the neutrality and competence of its predecessors.
Highlighting delays in special voting arrangements in some regions, Mr. Kwetey noted that these challenges further dent the credibility of the EC.
“Two big regions, Western and Eastern, have had their special voting postponed. These hitches reveal serious lapses in the EC’s preparedness,” he pointed out.
Despite his criticisms of the EC, Mr. Kwetey expressed confidence in the NDC’s ability to overcome these challenges and secure victory.
As the December elections approach, the NDC’s assurance of a first-round win will hinge on their ability to mobilise voters effectively while addressing concerns about electoral fairness and transparency.
