Nanatunde Davies, a representative of MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) Limited, has revealed key tactics used by fraudsters to deceive MoMo users.
Speaking during a live session on MTN’s Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn platforms as part of the MoMo@15 Live Session, she shared details about common fraud schemes and urged users to be vigilant.
Nanatunde Davies explained that fraudsters don’t typically target specific customers; instead, they make random calls, and those who fall for their tricks become victims.
She highlighted several schemes used by fraudsters:
1. Fake Wrong Transfers: Fraudsters randomly contact customers, claiming they mistakenly sent money to their wallets, and request the money to be returned. In some cases, they send fake text messages to convince the customer of the supposed transfer.
2. Impersonating MTN Employees: Scammers pretend to be MTN workers, offering to help customers reverse fake transactions. During the process, they trick victims into revealing their MoMo PIN, enabling the fraudsters to steal money.
3. Fake Promotions: Scammers inform customers they’ve won a promotion or invite them to participate in one. They then instruct the victim to dial certain numbers, which can compromise their security.
4. Fake Loan Links: Fraudsters circulate links offering loans. Once the customer clicks, they request personal details such as a Ghana Card number, which they use to defraud the victim.
5. Fake Online Vendors: These scammers advertise products online, but after receiving payment, they block the customer’s number and vanish without delivering the product.
Nanatunde Davies emphasised that MTN MoMo Limited is aware of these schemes and is implementing measures to combat fraud.
She urged customers to remain cautious and double-check any transaction requests or offers before taking action.
