MTN Hits 300M Users, Ghana Shines with 29M Subscribers

MTN Group has announced that it has officially reached its Ambition 2025 strategic target of serving 300 million customers across Africa, marking a historic moment in its three-decade journey of driving digital transformation on the continent.

The announcement came during the annual Ambassadors Appreciation Dinner, held on Wednesday, which brought together diplomats, public sector leaders, MTN Group executives, and CEOs from across its markets. The event served as a platform to deepen collaboration, investment, and policy alignment in support of Africa’s digital future.

“The time is now for Africa to take charge of its own socioeconomic progress. We need to look within for solutions and develop our own communities,” said Ralph Mupita, MTN Group President and CEO, reflecting on the impact of global geopolitical uncertainty on foreign aid flows.

Mupita applauded MTN employees—known as MTNers—for their unwavering commitment to expanding digital and financial inclusion, especially through the 21 Days of Y’ello Care campaign, which mobilises staff annually to drive change in rural, remote, and underserved areas.

“Tonight, we celebrate our Y’ello Care employee volunteers and take inspiration from their can-do attitude. Their dedication has helped the Group reach this strategic milestone of serving more than 300 million customers—just three decades after our first commercial operation in South Africa,” Mupita said.

One of MTN’s standout performers on the continent is MTN Ghana, which has recorded steady subscriber growth over the past year.

As of early 2025, MTN Ghana boasts approximately 29.2 million mobile subscribers, up 5.2% year-on-year, cementing its position as the market leader. The company also reports 17.5 million active data users, representing a 13.7% growth, and 17.2 million Mobile Money (MoMo) customers.

This growth underscores Ghana’s central role in MTN’s ambition to create a digitally connected and financially inclusive Africa, aligning with national efforts to deepen ICT adoption and support economic transformation.

The 2025 Y’ello Care campaign, themed “Connecting at the Roots: Connecting communities through the use of digital tools”, highlighted how innovation and collaboration are transforming lives.

Nompilo Morafo, MTN Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer, said the campaign embodies the company’s belief that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern connected life.

“Y’ello Care reminds us that progress is ultimately built through people—their ideas, commitment, and compassion,” Morafo added.

Several MTN operations received top honours for their innovative community initiatives:

  • MTN Eswatini won for its Government in Your Hand initiative, integrating MoMo to deliver public services and boost digital literacy.
  • MTN Cameroon earned the WECA Region Award for community-driven digital centres.
  • MTN Uganda was recognised for its solar-powered health centres and digital training programmes.
  • MoMo received the inaugural Platform Business Award for advancing financial inclusion through technology.
  • MTN Nigeria received a Special Mention for its Y’ello Boxes and MoMo Market Storm initiatives supporting women and small businesses.

Mupita expressed deep appreciation to the diplomatic community for fostering policies that enable sustainable investment and innovation.

He reaffirmed MTN’s commitment to Africa’s Agenda 2063, stressing that partnership remains key to building an inclusive, digital future.

“This journey is ambitious but achievable—grounded in collaboration and guided by a shared vision,” he concluded.
