The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed a sharp rise in mpox cases, with 23 new infections and the country’s first recorded death from the virus since the outbreak began, bringing the national case count to 257 as of July 22.
This latest development marks the most significant weekly spike in recent times and signals a troubling shift in the outbreak’s trajectory, which until now had seen no fatalities and relatively stable numbers.
Mpox—formerly known as monkeypox—is a contagious viral disease transmitted through close physical contact with infected individuals, particularly through skin lesions, body fluids, or respiratory droplets. It is characterised by fever, swollen lymph nodes, body aches, and a telltale rash or blisters.

Health officials attribute the continued spread to close contact between individuals, particularly in communal settings. Vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals are at heightened risk of severe illness or complications.
In a statement, the GHS urged the public to remain vigilant:
“We encourage everyone to practice good personal hygiene, avoid contact with people showing symptoms, and report early signs like fever, rash, or body aches to the nearest health facility.”
This latest update represents a sharp uptick from just four days earlier, when a GHS briefing on July 18 reported 234 confirmed cases with no hospitalisations or deaths. The rapid jump underscores the importance of early detection and timely isolation to prevent further transmission.
Health authorities are also calling on community leaders, schools, and transport operators to assist in raising awareness and monitoring for symptoms. A renewed public education campaign is expected to roll out in the coming days.
