MEF Celebrates 25 Years of Mobile Innovation with New Book

The Mobile Ecosystem Forum (MEF) is marking a major milestone as it celebrates 25 years at the heart of the mobile industry.

To commemorate the occasion, MEF is publishing a book that chronicles its journey from a niche industry association to a global trade body with members spanning the mobile, technology, media, and financial sectors.

Founded in 2000, MEF was established to unify stakeholders in the then-emerging mobile entertainment industry, setting standards and advocating for best practices. Over the years, it has evolved into a key voice for the broader mobile ecosystem, addressing industry challenges and spearheading initiatives to ensure innovation, security, and consumer trust.

Andrew Bud, one of MEF’s original founders, recalls the early days of the organisation. “Nobody understood the business we were in,” he said. “There was mobile, and there was entertainment, and they were separate. Our job was to bring them together, create a new category, and then give it some personality and value.”

Throughout its history, MEF has been instrumental in shaping the industry. It played a crucial role in addressing unethical value-added services (VAS) subscriptions by enforcing transparency measures, ensuring customers were informed about costs and service providers. When smishing scams eroded consumer trust in mobile messaging, MEF launched the SenderID Registry to protect users and restore confidence in the ecosystem.

Beyond its advocacy work, MEF has also fostered industry collaboration through its flagship events. The annual MEFFYS Awards, held at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, recognise excellence and innovation in the sector. MEF’s Consumer Trust Survey has also become an essential benchmark for assessing the state of user confidence in mobile services.

Today, the organisation continues to lead the charge in key areas such as messaging security, mobile payments, fraud prevention, and identity verification. “MEF’s mission is more relevant than ever,” said current CEO Dario Betti. “The mobile industry is a cornerstone of digital transformation, powering everything from business messaging and fraud prevention to omnichannel customer engagement. MEF has adapted to these shifts and actively shaped them.”

The new book, 25 Years of MEF: The Official History, written by industry expert Tim Green, provides an in-depth look at MEF’s impact and evolution. “Writing this book has been a fascinating journey of discovery, reminiscences, and excitement about the future,” Green said. “The next chapter promises to be just as exciting as the last.”

The book is set for release on March 4, 2025, and will be available directly through the Mobile Ecosystem Forum’s website.
