Mason Jailed for Damaging GH₵450,000 Hisense Company Car
The Amasaman Circuit Court has sentenced a 32-year-old mason, Senyo Awuku, to three years in prison with hard labour for unlawfully damaging a Donfeng Ex-Box car worth US$35,900, belonging to Hisense Company Limited.
Awuku pleaded guilty to the charge of causing unlawful damage and was sentenced accordingly. However, he denied charges of unlawful entry and stealing, involving the alleged theft of the vehicle, an HP laptop valued at GH₵4,300, and GH₵4,000 in cash. The court, presided over by Ms. Enid Marful-Sau, has scheduled his next appearance on March 13, 2025, to face the remaining charges.
According to Police Chief Inspector Salifu Nashiru, the complainant, Mr. Gad Ebenezer Afranie Kisi, a customer service officer at Hisense Company Ltd, resides at Danchira Ocloo Farms, while Awuku lives in Hobor, a suburb of Accra.

On January 30, 2025, after returning from work, Mr. Kisi parked his official Donfeng Ex-Box car (GT 4955-24) in his house. He placed his laptop, the car keys, and GH₵4,000 in cash on a table before going to bed.
By the next morning, all the items were missing. Mr. Kisi reported the theft to the Danchira Police and shared photos of the stolen car on social media, urging the public for assistance. On February 1, 2025, a friend of the complainant spotted the stolen vehicle near Amasaman-Three Junction and immediately informed him. Mr. Kisi rushed to the location, but upon spotting him, Awuku attempted to escape, speeding off in the stolen car.
A high-speed chase ensued, ending when Awuku crashed the car into a container at Ademan, rendering it beyond repair. He abandoned the wrecked vehicle and tried to flee on foot, but with the help of bystanders, he was caught and handed over to the Danchira Police.
During court proceedings, Awuku pleaded for leniency, expressing remorse for his actions. However, the prosecution highlighted the irreversible damage to the vehicle, emphasising the severity of the crime.
Considering both the mitigation plea and the extent of the damage, the court sentenced Awuku to three years of hard labour for causing unlawful damage. It also ordered the release of the stolen laptop and vehicle to the rightful owner.
Awuku will return to court on March 13, 2025, to face trial for unlawful entry and theft, charges that could further extend his prison term if convicted.
This case highlights the rising incidents of vehicle theft and the dangers of criminal recklessness on Ghana’s roads.
