John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government of orchestrating a fake news campaign to tarnish his image ahead of the 2024 elections.
During a visit to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on November 3, as part of his campaign tour in the Ashanti Region, Mahama alleged that the disinformation drive is a desperate strategy by the NPP to shift attention from their failures.
“The seat of government knows about the recent propagation of fake news. Because their campaign has failed, they have resorted to lying and propagating fake news,” Mahama stated, expressing confidence in his credibility.
One claim Mahama addressed was an accusation that he orchestrated an attack on his convoy in Techiman. He categorically dismissed this as unfounded and aimed at sowing division among Ghanaians.
Mahama assured the Asantehene of his commitment to peaceful, issue-based campaigns and called for credible elections. “God knows everyone’s heart, and just as He enstools kings, He will have mercy on us and enstool His king,” he remarked.
The former president also urged stakeholders to uphold unity and national interest, warning against divisive political tactics that undermine Ghana’s democracy.
Mahama’s campaign in the Ashanti Region continues as he engages with traditional leaders and residents, emphasising his vision for a united and prosperous Ghana.
