Mahama Proposes Privatising ECG to Resolve Ghana’s Power Sector Woes

President John Dramani Mahama has hinted at the potential privatisation of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as a strategy to address the ongoing inefficiencies within the country’s power distribution system.

During a meeting with a World Bank delegation at his private office in Accra on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Mahama acknowledged that the privatisation of ECG could be key to resolving critical challenges such as operational inefficiencies, financial mismanagement, and poor service delivery.

Mahama outlined his belief that involving the private sector in the management of ECG could usher in the needed reforms to modernise the energy sector and improve its performance.

“If we don’t fix the Electricity Company of Ghana, we will continue to have a major problem with our whole power value chain,” Mahama stated.

He emphasised the urgency of addressing these issues, noting that privatising ECG’s distribution segment could help bring in the efficiency required to meet Ghana’s growing energy demands.

Reflecting on Ghana’s participation in the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact during his time as Vice President, Mahama noted that an efficient energy distribution system is crucial for achieving the nation’s broader development goals.

He explained that any decision on privatisation would be part of a comprehensive effort to modernise the sector while ensuring sustainability and service reliability.

The president also reassured stakeholders that any move to privatise ECG would involve extensive consultations to ensure that public interests are balanced with the sector’s need for improved efficiency. “We want to speak with the World Bank to get the expertise to be able to do that,” Mahama added, highlighting the importance of expert input in executing such an initiative.
