Mahama demands accountability amid allegations of last-minute recruitment

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has called for transparency and accountability from the Transition Team amid concerns over alleged last-minute actions by the outgoing administration.

These claims include mass government recruitments and a disbursement of GH₵240 million to a business partner of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Speaking at a joint Transition Team meeting on Wednesday, December 13, Mahama highlighted the potential burden such actions could place on his incoming administration.

“There are a few signals that have been raised with respect to some contracts at the last minute that will commit the new government. I hope that the joint transition team will deal with it,” he stated.

Mahama also expressed concerns about mass recruitments into various government agencies, describing them as liabilities for the new administration.

The allegations have sparked debate, with a spokesperson for the outgoing administration’s transition team, Fatimatu Abubakar, vehemently denying the claims.

“I was so surprised when I heard those comments. I couldn’t believe my eyes,” Fatimatu Abubakar said.

She emphasized that no new recruitments had been made since the administration lost the election, adding that claims of financial impropriety were misleading and could incite public unrest.

Hon. Fatimatu also pointed out that similar concerns had been raised during previous transitions but urged all parties to focus on collaboration rather than accusations.

“The goodwill and commitment shown by both President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and President-elect John Dramani Mahama indicate that they want a smooth transition in the interest of the nation,” she added.

The Transition Team continues its work as both sides aim to ensure a seamless handover.

However, the allegations have underscored the challenges inherent in maintaining trust and cooperation during such processes.

President-elect Mahama has called for vigilance to ensure that the transition is conducted with integrity, safeguarding the country’s resources and public confidence.
