Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), has officially declared John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the president-elect in Ghana’s 2024 general elections.
The elections saw a voter turnout of 60.9% across 267 constituencies. While some parliamentary seats remain unresolved due to disputes, the NDC has secured a majority in Parliament, strengthening its position for governance.
What began as a peaceful voting process on Saturday morning escalated into chaos in certain areas, with allegations of attempted rigging and delays in result collation. Post-election violence has left three people dead and many others injured. The Ghana Police Service has arrested 89 individuals for various election-related offences.
Sammy Gyamfi, National Communications Officer of the NDC, urged supporters to avoid causing further disturbances. On the other hand, Salam Mohammed Mustapha, the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), condemned the actions of NDC supporters and called for swift police intervention to maintain order.
