“It must be our collective responsibility to make recommendations that are far-reaching, transformative, and necessary for developing the global Ghanaian. As a government, we are fully committed to this process. I want to assure you that your recommendations will not gather dust on the shelf,” Mahama stated.

His remarks sought to allay fears that the forum’s outcomes would not be acted upon, reinforcing the administration’s resolve to translate policy discussions into tangible reforms.

As part of his campaign commitment to engaging the public on improving Ghana’s education system—particularly the Free SHS policy—President Mahama appointed an eight-member committee on February 2, 2025, to organise the National Education Forum.

The forum aims to solicit expert opinions and stakeholder inputs to refine existing policies and introduce necessary modifications for a more efficient and inclusive education system.

The committee is chaired by former Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Professor George K. T. Oduro. Other distinguished educationists and policymakers on the committee include:

  • Professor Goski Alabi
  • Professor Rosemary Bosu
  • Dr. Samuel Awuku
  • Professor Smile Dzisi
  • Kofi Asare
  • Stephen Owusu
  • Inusah Shiraz

These individuals bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the forum, ensuring a robust and well-informed discourse on education reforms.

Under its Terms of Reference (TOR), the Planning Committee has been tasked with the following responsibilities:

  • Developing a guiding theme for the forum
  • Identifying key stakeholders for participation
  • Formulating a structured agenda for discussions
  • Selecting a suitable venue for the event
  • Setting up a secretariat to manage proceedings
  • Preparing a detailed budget to support the initiative

With a two-week deadline to submit its report and strategic plan, the committee is expected to lay the groundwork for key policy decisions that will strengthen Ghana’s education system.

The National Education Forum brings together a diverse range of stakeholders, including education experts, policymakers, civil society groups, and religious leaders, to deliberate on strategies for enhancing Ghana’s education sector.

As the forum progresses, there is great anticipation that its recommendations will serve as a blueprint for significant policy shifts, ensuring that Ghanaian students receive quality education that meets both national and global standards.

With Mahama’s assurance that the forum’s findings will not “gather dust,” stakeholders remain hopeful that this initiative will mark a turning point in shaping the future of education in Ghana.
