Staff of the Legal Aid Commission have declared their intention to strike starting Monday, November 25, over years of neglect and their exclusion from the newly inaugurated Law House.
Despite the Law House being commissioned five months ago, the Commission continues to operate in overcrowded, dilapidated offices, with some spaces meant for one person now housing up to ten. Lawyers lack privacy when meeting clients, and hallways have been converted into makeshift storage areas.
Staff members described torn, bed bug-infested chairs and the lack of basic facilities as dire. Frustrated clients like Lordina Adjeley Annan shared their disappointment:
“I can’t even talk to my lawyer without all eyes staring at me. This is not fair!”
The looming strike highlights the pressing need for improved conditions and relocation to the Law House to restore dignity to the essential legal services provided by the Commission.
