Kwesi Appiah, head coach of Sudan’s national football team, has revealed his ambition to guide the Falcons of Jediane to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
This comes in the wake of Sudan’s remarkable qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), slated to take place in Morocco.
Sudan currently leads Group B with 10 points from four matches, underscoring their strong performance under Appiah’s leadership.
In an interview with BBC Africa, the Ghanaian coach encouraged his players to set lofty goals.
“I tell [the players]: ‘How can you aim to go to the World Cup if you don’t put yourself at the level of Spain, England, or Brazil?’” Appiah shared.
He also highlighted the power of football to foster unity, citing Sudan’s 3-0 triumph over South Sudan in Juba as a moment that brought both nations together. “Large sections of the crowd joined in with Sudan’s national anthem,” he said. “It brought a lot of unity to both countries.”
Despite their strong form, Sudan faces formidable opponents in Group B, including Senegal and DR Congo. Appiah remains focused on sustaining his team’s momentum as they prepare for pivotal matches against Senegal and South Sudan in March 2025.
With their current trajectory, Sudan’s aspirations of making history by qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are becoming increasingly realistic under Appiah’s guidance.
