Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has applauded Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his selfless act of funding the medical treatment of Priscilla, a four-year-old girl who overcame leprosy.
Anyidoho expressed admiration for Dr. Bawumia’s unwavering support for the vulnerable, regardless of their background, and commended his dedication to humanity.
Praising the vice president, who was the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate in the 2024 general elections, Anyidoho encouraged him to remain steadfast in his journey despite his electoral defeat.
“One election cycle doesn’t define a man’s life. Dr. Bawumia is going on with his life, and that’s very important. Ayekoo,” Anyidoho wrote on social media on December 26, 2024.
Dr. Bawumia himself reflected on the significance of Priscilla’s visit to his home on Christmas Day, describing it as his “best Christmas gift.” The young girl, who had her leg amputated due to complications from leprosy, recently returned from Italy, where she underwent successful surgery and received a prosthetic leg.
In a heartfelt post on December 26, Dr. Bawumia shared, “To God be the glory. Priscilla, a four-year-old cured leper from the Weija Leprosarium whom I sponsored for medical treatment of her amputated leg in Italy, visited me yesterday to show that she can now walk with her new leg. It was the best Christmas gift I could ask for.”
A video accompanying the post captured the emotional moment when Priscilla reunited with Dr. Bawumia at his Accra residence. Accompanied by Rev. Father Andrew Campbell, caretaker of the Weija Leprosarium, and other officials, Priscilla walked confidently into the vice president’s living room. Dr. Bawumia warmly embraced her, while her beaming smile and excitement left everyone present deeply moved. In Twi, she proudly declared, “I’m walking for Dr. Bawumia.”
Priscilla’s journey has been one of resilience and hope. Abandoned at birth due to her condition, she has been under the care of Rev. Father Campbell at the Weija Leprosarium. Despite efforts to save her legs, her condition required amputation.
As a patron of Lepers Aid Ghana and a frequent visitor to the leprosarium, Dr. Bawumia met Priscilla and committed to changing her life.
He sponsored her treatment at a world-renowned facility in Italy, where she received specialised care and a prosthetic leg.
After five months of recovery, Priscilla returned to Ghana, walking confidently and radiating hope. Dr. Bawumia’s act of kindness serves as a powerful example of leadership that prioritises compassion and makes a lasting difference in people’s lives.
