Kenya: The pain of the bereaved, calls for fresh protests

Kenyans were deeply affected even after days of violent protests against the proposed tax hikes and the bill’s withdrawal.

Cases of kidnapping and arbitrary arrests were recorded by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.

According to the body, 26 people lost their lives in the June 25 rally alone. Numerous others suffered injuries.

Many companies are also tallying their losses as a result of building fires and looting.

William Ruto has been meeting with various parties in the State House in an attempt to find a long-term solution in the wake of the protests.

The President has ordered the formation of a committee to address the grievances of young people who are unhappy with the way things are going in the nation.

But there are still calls for another demonstration, especially on X (previously Twitter), for this Tuesday, July 2. A few are even calling for the president to step down.

There are still a lot of security guards in Nairobi in case there are more protests.

In observance of the those who lost their lives during the protests on Tuesday and Thursday, there were candlelight gatherings at the Jeevanjee Garden and nonviolent demonstrations around the capital’s core business district.
