Justice Gabriel Pwamang gives me hope in Ghana’s Judiciary- Prof. Ransford Gyampo
Justice Gabriel Pwamang’s recent Supreme Court ruling has sparked widespread admiration, with Professor Ransford Gyampo, a senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, describing him as a beacon of hope for Ghana’s judiciary.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Professor Gyampo highlighted Justice Pwamang’s “solid, fair, firm, and commonsensical reasoning” in delivering a landmark judgement that annulled the Electoral Commission’s (EC) declarations in four constituencies.
“Justice Gabriel Pwamang gives me hope in the judiciary,” Professor Gyampo wrote. “Solid, fair, firm, and commonsensical reasoning behind judgment. He handled the allegation of bias of the High Court judge cleverly. Others would have arrogantly dismissed it.”
The comments come in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling on Friday, December 27, which quashed a December 20 High Court order directing the EC to recollate results in nine disputed constituencies.
Justice Pwamang’s judgement annulled the recollated results for Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, and Techiman South while upholding the results for Nsawam Adoagyiri and Ahafo Ano South West.
In his ruling, Justice Pwamang declared, “We hereby quash the orders of mandamus made for collation of results by the EC in the following constituencies: Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, and Techiman South.”
The case, brought forward by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), argued that the High Court’s directive undermined the transparency and integrity of the electoral process. While the EC has implemented the recollation directive in seven constituencies—all won by New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidates—the results for Dome/Kwabenya and Ablekuma North remain unresolved.
Professor Gyampo’s praise for Justice Pwamang resonates with many who view the ruling as a pivotal moment in Ghana’s legal and political landscape.
The judgement has been hailed for its meticulous reasoning and balanced approach, which many believe reinforces public confidence in the judiciary’s role as an impartial arbiter in electoral disputes.
Justice Pwamang’s conduct, particularly his tactful handling of allegations of judicial bias, has been lauded as a benchmark for fairness and professionalism in the legal fraternity. Observers note that his measured approach has set a new standard for judicial excellence, earning him widespread respect and admiration.
