Jurors go on strike over underpaid stipends

Ghanaian jurors went on strike because they were not paid for their transportation, court attendance, or sitting allowances.

The jurors declared the strike on Thursday, stating that the unpaid debt dates back to February 2023.

At the beginning of the nationwide strike on Thursday, all trials requiring jury presence were postponed.

The jurors kindly requested to be informed that they will not be participating in jury duty on Thursday, May 16, 2024. The letter was sent to the Court Manager of the Law Court Complex and was copied to the Judicial Secretary and all criminal judges.

“The absence is due to the non-payment of our allowance for February 2023 and from July 2023 to May 2024 (10 months’ allowance in arrears).

“This situation has made it practically impossible for us to continue to pre-finance our transportation to and from court premises.
