The 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has issued a stern warning to potential appointees of his next government, stating they would be held accountable and face punishment for any misconduct.
Speaking at the grand launch of the party’s campaign in Tamale, Northern Region, Mr. Mahama emphasised that those who wish to serve in the new administration must be committed to modesty, honesty, hard work, and accountability.
“As we hold the previous government accountable for wrongdoing, if you serve in the next John Mahama government, if you are accused of wrongdoing, you will also be punished and held accountable,” he stated.
Mahama highlighted the importance of integrity in governance and reassured Ghanaians that his administration would maintain high standards of accountability. He stressed that while his government will hold the previous administration accountable for any wrongdoing, his own appointees would not be exempt from scrutiny.
Campaign Coordinator for Mr. Mahama, Professor Joshua Alabi, stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would have no option but to hand over power peacefully if it loses. Prof. Alabi assured Ghanaians that the NDC is committed to protecting their votes.
The former president assured Ghanaians that he will remain truthful and avoid making promises he cannot fulfil as he campaigns for votes ahead of the December 7 polls. He acknowledged that his previous presidency faced challenges but asserted that Ghana was making progress during his tenure.
“I’ve been out of government for eight years now. I did my best; I wouldn’t say things were perfect, but at least we were making progress. What I can promise you is that I will be truthful to you; I will never tell you lies; I will never tell you things I cannot do,” Mr. Mahama said.
He urged the public to vote for the NDC, emphasising his readiness to serve the nation once more with renewed vigour and a clear vision for Ghana’s future. Mahama pledged to continue being transparent with the citizens and to build on the foundations laid during his previous administration if elected again.
