The Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, has called on members of the incoming 9th Parliament to prioritise their parliamentary responsibilities and serve the interests of their constituents above partisan agendas.
This statement comes ahead of the dissolution of the 8th Parliament, set for January 6, and the swearing-in of the 9th Parliament, which coincides with the eve of the presidential inauguration.
Speaking in an interview with Citi News, Mr. Djietror underscored the need for members of Parliament to dedicate themselves to addressing the needs and concerns of the people they represent.
He urged the incoming MPs to ensure that their work reflects the aspirations of their constituents and contributes meaningfully to national development.
“Members of Parliament-elect must apprise themselves about their roles,” Djietror stated. “Members of Parliament are not in Parliament to reinforce party positions or to pursue party interests.”
Highlighting the critical role of Parliament in shaping the nation’s progress, the Clerk stressed the importance of integrity and dedication in the discharge of parliamentary duties.
“Political parties come to power based on a manifesto. The manifesto is supposed to contain policies that would further the interest and the development of the nation,” he remarked, emphasising that MPs must act as stewards of these commitments rather than merely serving party lines.
