I’ll accept election results only if… – Mahama

National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama has vowed to accept the outcome of Ghana’s December 7 general elections only if the process is transparent and credible.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the BBC, the former president expressed doubts about the fairness of the upcoming polls, warning that any result marred by irregularities or violence would not be acceptable.

Mr. Mahama highlighted specific threats to the credibility of the election, including ballot snatching, voter intimidation, and the misuse of security forces. He cautioned that such actions could undermine Ghana’s democratic reputation.

“If on election day, there is widespread ballot snatching, beating of people, the military moving in and intimidating people, and thugs rampaging, you want me to accept that result? It will depend on the transparency and fairness of the process,” he said.

The former president underscored the importance of safeguarding Ghana’s democracy, emphasising that a free and fair electoral process is crucial for national stability.

“We must protect the integrity of this election to ensure that Ghana remains a beacon of democracy in Africa,” Mr. Mahama added.

With just two days until Ghanaians head to the polls, tensions remain high. Concerns about electoral violence and irregularities have dominated discussions, with both the NDC and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) accusing each other of attempting to manipulate the process.

Election observers and stakeholders are urging all parties to commit to peaceful conduct and respect for the will of the people to ensure a smooth electoral process.

The Electoral Commission has assured the public of its commitment to delivering a free, fair, and transparent election. Ghanaians and the international community will be watching closely as events unfold on election day.
