Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has declared that instead of taxis churches, his administration will provide incentive for them to embark on more developments projects.
He thinks that church are in a better position to work with the government to advance national development.
This declaration is made in the midst of preliminary conversations over taxing churches.
Dr. Bawumia, however, dispute this, pointing out the important role churches play in society.
“If you look at the work the church has done, we should rather be paying them instead of them paying us”, the NPP flagbearer said at a meeting with the clergy in the Bono East area as part of his ongoing nationwide trip.
“If you look at the buildings, the way they keep society together—the universities, the hospitals, the schools—is massive, unless you don’t understand the work the church has done.” It really is enormous. There are hundreds of schools in many churches. Thus, I don’t see it and I won’t allow ourselves to be in a position where taxing churches.
“We will rather want to give churches incentives to support what the government is doing. I want us to be partners in the way that the development partners are with us. You are our domestic development partners and we will give you incentives to do more.”
