GTEC Directs CETAG to End Strike, Urges Continued Dialogue

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has called on the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) to immediately suspend its strike to pave the way for further dialogue.

The directive follows a closed-door meeting between the two parties after CETAG declared a strike on Thursday, January 2, 2025.

The strike stems from unresolved issues, which CETAG claims have been ignored for too long.

In a press statement, GTEC’s Director-General, Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, expressed disappointment with CETAG’s decision, describing it as “poorly timed and counterproductive.”

He stressed the importance of constructive engagement over industrial action, particularly at a critical time for the education sector.

“This is not happening just suddenly,” Abdulai explained. “We had to start with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission doing the mapping for about one to two months at a very high cost borne by GTEC. For CETAG to declare a strike now, despite ongoing efforts to resolve these issues, is extremely unfortunate.”

He highlighted the implications of CETAG’s strike, which he said threatens the operations of colleges of education across the country.

“A total withdrawal of services means a total shutdown of institutions, and this is something GTEC is totally against. Admissions are ongoing, and WAEC results were released just two days ago. By withdrawing your services, you disrupt the entire admission process,” he added.

Abdulai also assured CETAG of GTEC’s commitment to addressing their grievances, including migrating their colleges to full university status. He called for patience and trust in the process.

“We urge CETAG to reconsider their decision and call off the strike immediately. GTEC remains committed to dialogue and finding lasting solutions to their concerns,” Abdulai concluded.

As CETAG’s strike continues to draw attention, stakeholders are closely watching for a resolution that ensures stability in Ghana’s tertiary education system.
