Gregory Afoko Granted GH₵500k Bail After Nearly a Decade in Custody

After spending nearly ten years on remand, Gregory Afoko has finally been granted bail by the High Court in Accra.

The court, presided over by Justice Marie-Louise Simmons, set the bail at GH₵500,000 with two sureties, one of whom must justify with a landed property.

Afoko, who is facing retrial for the alleged murder of former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama, was ordered to report to the police investigator as part of his bail conditions. His previous attempts at securing bail had been repeatedly denied under the previous NPP administration.

The prosecution, for the first time, did not oppose the bail application, after the defence provided sufficient proof that the accused could meet the conditions. The defence team further assured the court that Afoko’s brother, former NPP National Chairman Paul Afoko, was willing to stand as surety.

Afoko and his co-accused, Asabke, are currently undergoing a retrial for murder. Asabke was previously convicted and sentenced to death for conspiracy. The prosecution has already discharged five witnesses, with a sixth set to appear in court soon.

The case dates back to May 20, 2015, when Adams Mahama was attacked with acid, leading to his death. Gregory Afoko was arrested and charged in connection with the crime. His first trial ended in a hung jury on April 27, 2023, with a 4-3 split in his favour, prompting a retrial.

The new proceedings are ongoing, with the substantive hearing adjourned to March 5, 2025.
