Greater Accra NDC leadership divided over directive on national appointments
The Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, has issued a controversial directive requesting constituency chairpersons to submit nominees for national-level appointments in the incoming John Dramani Mahama-led government, set to commence on January 7, 2025.
However, this move has been met with strong opposition from the regional chairman, Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore.
In a press statement dated December 25, 2024, Mr. Ashie Moore disassociated himself from the directive, describing it as a unilateral decision by the regional secretary without consultation with the party’s structures.
“I am not aware of such a notification from the apex level of the party. Neither has the regional executive committee been consulted nor approved such a directive,” he stated.
The directive, outlined in a letter dated December 24, 2024, instructed constituency chairpersons to submit details of qualified candidates, including their areas of interest, for ministerial, deputy ministerial, ambassadorial, and other key positions. Constituencies were given a deadline of December 30, 2024, to comply.
The letter surfaced online and was widely circulated on social media, prompting the regional chairman’s swift response.
Mr. Ashie Moore emphasised that party members should disregard the directive, stating, “This is indeed a sole decision of the regional secretary without any recourse to laid-down party structures.”
Mr. Tetteh Chaie has yet to issue a public response to the controversy, leaving questions about the origins and intent of the directive unanswered.
While the regional chairman’s statement did not outright deny the authenticity of the letter, it made clear that no formal party decision had been made to support such a directive.
Mr. Ashie Moore further reiterated the party’s focus on ensuring a smooth transition to government. He noted that the president-elect’s transition team is prioritising the delivery of key policy objectives within the first 120 days of the new administration.
“Our focus remains on fulfilling the mandate given to us by Ghanaians and ensuring a seamless handover process ahead of the January 7, 2025, swearing-in ceremony,” he added.
