Gov’t Remains Committed to Fight Against Drug Abuse – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his government’s determination to tackle drug abuse, describing it as a destructive menace threatening Ghana’s future.

Delivering a speech on his behalf at the climax of the Dumba Festival in Wa, Upper West Regional Minister Charles Lwanga Puozuing said the President recognised the vulnerability of the youth to drug abuse and stressed the need for collective action.

“The fight against drug abuse cannot be left to government alone. Traditional authorities, who remain custodians of our culture and conscience, have a pivotal role to play,” President Mahama stated.

He said drug abuse destroys families, fuels crime, and robs young people of their potential, calling on chiefs and elders to intensify community sensitisation, enforce by-laws, and mentor the youth.

The President assured of plans to strengthen law enforcement agencies, expand rehabilitation services, and create new opportunities through initiatives such as the 24-hour economy and industrial parks.

He further pledged to deepen civic engagement by supporting regional task forces, including the Upper West Anti-Drug Abuse Taskforce, to sustain community-driven action against the menace.

“With traditional authorities guiding our people, government providing leadership, and citizens uniting in purpose, I am confident that we can turn the tide,” Mahama emphasised.
