Government Donates GH₵1 Million to Kantamanto Market Fire Victims

The government has provided a one-million-cedi relief package to support victims of the Kantamanto Market fire, which devastated over 7,000 shops in Accra on January 2, 2025.

The donation fulfils a promise made by President John Dramani Mahama during a meeting with the Kantamanto Traders Association, representing 13 trader groups, shortly after assuming office.

The fire, which affected over 30,000 traders, destroyed significant portions of the market, leaving many struggling to rebuild.

In response, the Chief of Staff, along with senior government officials, presented the compensation on behalf of the president.

The government also announced plans to rebuild the market into a modern, multipurpose facility to improve the operations of used clothes dealers and other traders.

The Chief of Staff highlighted the importance of redesigning the market for better security, rapid response capabilities, and enhanced access to prevent future disasters.

Rev. Opoku Afreh, Chairman of the Kantamanto Traders Association, expressed gratitude for the support and revealed ongoing negotiations with ACCESS Bank for a $100 million loan to construct a modernised market.

He urged the government to help resolve a land dispute affecting the reconstruction plans.

The relief package and future market redevelopment plans aim to restore livelihoods and ensure a safer and more efficient trading environment for Kantamanto’s traders.
