In a groundbreaking move to reshape the future of smart infrastructure, global technology leaders Legrand, Schneider Electric, and Siemens Smart Infrastructure have announced the formation of a strategic interest group to advance the adoption of NR+, a next-generation wireless connectivity standard for smart buildings.
Backed by industry experts—including Last Mile Semiconductor, Nordic Semiconductor ASA, DSR Corporation, Wirepas, and Kudelski IoT—this alliance aims to establish NR+ as the global benchmark for ultra-resilient, interoperable, and cost-efficient connectivity in digital infrastructure.
The initiative will be hosted by the DECT Forum, a leading association promoting wireless communication standards.

Despite rapid advancements in technology, 75% of buildings worldwide remain energy inefficient, contributing to nearly 30% of global energy consumption. This inefficiency is partly due to fragmented and outdated building management systems that lack seamless connectivity.
Recognising this challenge, the NR+ interest group seeks to implement a unified wireless solution that can support massive-scale IoT networks with long-range, ultra-resilient, and cost-effective connectivity. The demand for wireless devices in buildings is expected to surge into the hundreds of millions annually, making the need for a robust, interoperable standard more pressing than ever.
NR+ is designed to address these challenges by enabling self-healing, decentralised mesh networks that do not depend on traditional, centralised infrastructure. This significantly reduces operational costs, enhances network reliability, and extends the lifespan of IoT ecosystems.
“NR+ is purpose-built for large-scale, dense sensor networks, capable of adapting to various systems while meeting high standards for scalability, cost, and reliability,” said Andreas Zipp, Chairman of the DECT Forum. “Bringing together global leaders in technology and wireless innovation confirms the potential of NR+ to set a new standard in buildings.”
The NR+ interest group will collaborate with:
✅ Silicon vendors to develop cutting-edge semiconductor solutions
✅ Stack providers and access point manufacturers to expand device compatibility
✅ Smart building standards organisations to ensure interoperability
✅ Regulatory bodies to advocate for global adoption of the NR+ standard
By aligning technology innovation with the practical needs of building owners, operators, and system integrators, this initiative will play a crucial role in the digital transformation of urban infrastructure.
NR+ is the world’s first non-cellular 5G standard, engineered to support large-scale IoT deployments in challenging environments. Built for long-range, low-power communication, NR+ operates on license-free spectrum, offering businesses and municipalities a scalable and secure solution for modernising their buildings.
By setting a new global standard for smart building connectivity, the NR+ interest group is poised to drive the industry toward greater energy efficiency, enhanced automation, and sustainable digital transformation.
