Ghana’s Parliament approves GH₵65.9 million budget for Sports and Recreational Ministry

Parliament has approved GH₵65,899,456 for the Ministry of Sports and Recreation for the 2025 fiscal year, but the decision has stirred heated debate over the lack of dedicated funding for maintaining the nation’s crumbling sports infrastructure.

During the budget debate, Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams announced plans to renovate the Accra Sports Stadium after Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Chad. However, MPs expressed disappointment that the budget failed to allocate specific funds for the upkeep of vital sports facilities.

Dominic Nitiwul, MP for Bimbilla, criticised the omission, arguing that relying on the finance minister or president for ad hoc funding was unsustainable. “We cannot leave it to the discretion of the finance minister or the president to say we will do it,” he asserted, urging Parliament’s leadership to prioritise capital expenditure for sports infrastructure.

Frank Annoh-Dompreh, MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, echoed similar concerns, stressing that without dedicated funding, the country’s sports facilities would continue to deteriorate. He warned that Ghana risks wasting its investments in sports infrastructure if maintenance is continually sidelined.

The budget approval has drawn backlash from sports enthusiasts and analysts who argue that infrastructure neglect threatens the nation’s athletic potential. Many believe consistent funding is critical to sustain and advance sports development in Ghana.

With the 2026 World Cup qualifiers approaching, stakeholders are urging the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to find innovative solutions to address infrastructure maintenance and safeguard the future of Ghanaian sports.
