Ghana’s Energy Sector Showing Signs of Recovery – Minister Jinapor

Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has declared that the country’s energy sector is undergoing a period of stability and recovery, driven by strategic reforms and technical improvements.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series held at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, July 16, the minister stated that the power sector has seen notable progress since the beginning of the year.

“We can confidently announce that this energy sector is indeed showing signs of stabilisation and improvement,” Jinapor said. “This has been driven by ongoing reforms aimed at addressing both technical and financial challenges, as well as modernising infrastructure.”

Jinapor noted that persistent and erratic power outages that plagued the country earlier this year have now been largely curtailed, thanks to coordinated interventions between the government, utility providers, and technical teams.

“The persistent and erratic power outages that plagued the country when we assumed office at the beginning of the year have witnessed a remarkable improvement. We are now experiencing a much more reliable, uninterrupted supply of power — and you can attest to that fact,” he told the gathering.

The minister also addressed recent public concerns surrounding scheduled maintenance work at the ENI gas facility, which many feared could trigger widespread blackouts.

“This Sunday, when we were undertaking the upgrading of the ENI facility to increase gas production, some people went to town and christened that Sunday as ‘National Dumsor Day’,” he recalled.
“Fortunately, through the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders and our technical team, we were able to conduct that operation successfully without switching even one megawatt off.”

Jinapor described the public commentary and satire that followed as a reminder of how deeply electricity affects Ghanaians’ daily lives.

“When I went on social media, I saw people saying they were disappointed. Others joked that the minister had forgotten to switch the lights off,” he said light-heartedly.
“But it all attests to the importance of electricity in our daily lives, and we will do everything we can to ensure that we build on the gains we have made and consolidate them.”

The minister emphasised that government efforts are not merely reactive but part of a broader energy reform agenda focused on:

  • Infrastructure modernisation
  • Debt restructuring
  • Capacity expansion through gas and renewable energy
  • Regulatory reforms to enhance accountability and efficiency

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to long-term energy security, economic stability, and industrial transformation through sustainable power delivery.
