Ghana’s 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic will officially dissolve today, closing a significant chapter in the nation’s legislative history.

This move paves the way for the swearing-in of the 9th Parliament at midnight, a transition that marks the start of a new legislative term.

The final sitting of the 8th Parliament will be presided over by the Speaker, the Right Honourable Alban Bagbin. During this session, Members of Parliament (MPs) will address any remaining business and bid farewell to their roles as the term concludes.

The 8th Parliament stands out as one of the most balanced in Ghana’s political history. Both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) began the term with 137 seats each, complemented by one Independent MP who held the balance of power. This unique composition created a vibrant and often contentious legislative environment, marked by extensive debates and strategic alliances.

Throughout its tenure, the 8th Parliament tackled numerous legislative challenges, with the even split in representation often requiring compromises and heightened negotiation skills. Observers have noted that this dynamic had a profound impact on Ghana’s democratic processes.

At midnight, newly elected MPs will be sworn into office, officially launching the 9th Parliament. A critical aspect of the inauguration will be the election of a Speaker of Parliament, with the possibility of retaining the current Speaker or electing a new one.
