Ghana Police restore order after Walewale NPP primary disruption

The Ghana Police Service has successfully restored calm in Walewale following a disruption during the vote-counting process in the rerun of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Primary for the Walewale Constituency.

The incident led to the arrest of Kamara Bawah, who was taken into custody for allegedly damaging several ballot papers. The suspect is currently assisting police with the ongoing investigation.

In response to the unrest, security measures have been intensified in Walewale and its surrounding areas to ensure law and order are maintained. Citi News North East Regional correspondent, Mohammed Aminu Alabira, reported that the election was disrupted, with military personnel allegedly assaulting some individuals at the voting centre.

Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru, one of the aspirants, expressed concerns over the venue and the election’s organisation, stating that there was a lack of official communication regarding the arrangements.

Additionally, the sorting and counting, which many expected to be conducted openly, took place behind closed doors in a church room.

According to the election committee chairman, the disruption was caused by an unidentified individual who has since been arrested. Dr. Kabiru, who believed he was leading during the sorting process, voiced his disappointment with how the election was handled, questioning the fairness of the process.

Constituency chairman Mohammed Muniru Janda echoed these concerns, expressing doubts about the security of the ballots and the overall fairness of the rerun.
