Ghana Chamber of Mines launches competency framework for mining sector

The Ghana Chamber of Mines has officially launched the Ghana Mining Competency Framework, aimed at standardising the measurement and definition of the knowledge and skills required for various roles within the mining sector.

This initiative is expected to help mining companies ensure that their workforce is trained and qualified to perform their duties safely and efficiently.

The launch was held on the sidelines of the 6th Human Resource Biennial Conference in Accra.

Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber, Mr. Sulemanu Koney, commended the Human Resources and Ad-hoc Committee members for their work in developing the framework.

He emphasised that the framework will serve as a foundation for designing training programs, assessments, and career development pathways, ultimately enhancing employee competency in the mining industry.

ā€œThe framework will be instrumental in shaping training programs and career development pathways, contributing to the overall competence and safety of the workforce,ā€ Mr. Koney stated.

He also encouraged human resource professionals in the industry to continue implementing initiatives that address the evolving needs of the mining sector.

The conference featured presentations and panel discussions on key topics, such as the future of work in the mining industry, diversity and inclusion, and the role of technology in driving sustainability.

Industry leaders shared insights on the need for collaboration and innovation to tackle the challenges facing the sector and ensure its long-term sustainability.

Mr. Koney also highlighted the critical role of HR professionals in driving sustainability within the mining sector, stating, ā€œAs the industry continues to evolve, it is clear that HR professionals will play a crucial role in shaping its future.ā€

The Ghana Chamber of Mines, which has been representing the mining industry since 1928, advocates for the collective interests of companies involved in mineral exploration, production, and processing.

Its member companies account for over 60% of Ghanaā€™s mineral output.
