The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has assured the public of its role in ensuring the peaceful conduct of the upcoming 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
In a press release issued by Brigadier General Eric Aggrey Quarshie, Director General of Public Relations, GAF emphasised its commitment to supporting the Ghana Police Service (GPS) while maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.
GAF clarified that its personnel are being deployed to designated locations across the country as part of preparations for election security.
The release urged citizens not to be alarmed by the sight of military movements in their communities, emphasising that this is a routine measure to support law enforcement efforts.
“No military personnel will be stationed at any polling station,” the statement stressed.
GAF’s involvement will be limited to standby support, with the GPS retaining primary responsibility for election security. The military will only intervene upon formal request from the police to address any emergent situations.
The release highlighted the collaborative strategy between GAF and GPS, aimed at ensuring a smooth and peaceful election. This partnership underscores GAF’s commitment to maintaining law and order while respecting the democratic process.
The Ghana Armed Forces also urged all Ghanaians to exercise their civic rights responsibly, cooperate with security personnel, and avoid any actions that could undermine the peace.
“GAF reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the stability and sovereignty of the nation whilst protecting the integrity of the election process,” Brigadier General Quarshie added.
As the nation approaches the 2024 elections, the GAF has reaffirmed its dedication to upholding Ghana’s democratic principles. Citizens are encouraged to remain calm and cooperative as the security apparatus works to ensure a peaceful electoral environment.
