President John Dramani Mahama has made it clear that splurging GH₵20 million on Ghana’s 68th Independence Day celebration was out of the question, describing such expenditure as “unconscionable” in the face of the nation’s economic hardships.
Speaking at the scaled-down event held at the Jubilee House on Thursday, March 6, Mahama underscored the importance of fiscal responsibility, emphasising that Ghana could not afford a lavish celebration while citizens were being asked to make sacrifices.
“This is necessary considering the economic crisis our nation is currently experiencing. Large-scale celebrations often come with significant security and infrastructure costs, which strain the national budget,” he stated. “By reducing the scale of the commitment, we wish to demonstrate a commitment to fiscal responsibility and the efficient use of our limited resources.”

The president justified his administration’s decision by pointing to past expenditures, revealing that GH₵15 million was spent on last year’s celebration in Koforidua, while GH₵13.7 million was used the previous year in Ho. If held at the Black Star Square, this year’s event was projected to cost at least GH₵20 million.
“In a year when we are calling on all to sacrifice, including workers who have graciously accepted a base pay adjustment far below the rate of inflation, it is unconscionable to spend that kind of money on a few hours of celebration,” Mahama stated firmly. “Today’s event will save us 95% of the estimated cost.”
The scaled-down commemoration, attended by government officials, former presidents, and foreign dignitaries, was a departure from the usual grand parades at Independence Square. Mahama emphasised that the significance of the day remained intact, despite the reduced spectacle.
“Ghana’s independence is the most defining moment in our history,” he said. “But in these trying times, we must prioritise the needs of the people over pomp and pageantry.”
The president’s decision has ignited debates across the country, with some praising the move as a show of responsible leadership, while others argue that national pride and tradition should not be compromised. Regardless, Mahama’s stance is clear: economic prudence must take precedence over extravagant celebrations.
