GACL Provides Details of McDan Aviation’s Arrears

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has closed McDan Aviation’s private jet terminal at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) over unpaid debts totalling $3,995,622.66 and GHS 13,523.37.

The closure, which occurred on Monday, December 30, 2024, follows multiple notices and a final payment deadline of December 25 that was not met.

The debt comprises terminal fees, rental charges, and land leases accrued over several years. Despite a partial payment of GHS 2 million made on December 24, the outstanding amount remains substantial.

GACL provided a detailed breakdown of McDan Aviation’s unpaid obligations, including:

  • Terminal 1 Rent and Fees: $640,232.48
  • Block Factory, Spintex Road (5.66 acres): $1,160,827.23
  • Airport Logistics Building, Spintex Road (10.63 acres): $2,168,266.75
  • Courier Enclave (0.59 acres): $8,140
  • Cargo Village Offices: $18,156.20 (GHS 13,523.37)

Additionally, McDan Aviation owes GACL a 15% share of its gross revenue for the period from September 1, 2022, to November 30, 2024, which has not been paid.

McDan Aviation has disputed the debt figures, claiming that $2 million of the amount pertains to a land acquisition currently under litigation.

However, GACL countered this claim, stating that McDan Aviation has developed the disputed land for commercial purposes and continues to benefit from rental proceeds without paying ground rent.

“It is also worthy to note that while McDan intimates that some of the lands acquired as far back as 2015 are under litigation, the company has constructed commercial buildings on these lands and continues to generate income from them,” GACL asserted.

In addition to the land-related debts, GACL highlighted McDan Aviation’s failure to meet its revenue-sharing obligations. Under their agreement, McDan Aviation is required to remit 15% of its gross revenue to GACL on a monthly basis.

The closure of McDan Aviation’s terminal is part of GACL’s year-end debt recovery efforts to ensure financial accountability across its operations.

“Despite several notices and ample time provided for settlement, McDan Aviation has failed to clear the outstanding debts. This action is in line with our broader initiative to recover all overdue payments,” GACL stated.
